Interracial Romance

When Vicki notices a small tear in the wallpaper of her old house, she discovers a hole in the actual wall. Tearing down the thin plaster, she finds a room of thick cement. Searching the internet for information about the houses in her neighborhood, she learns that years ago the area had been part of the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves. With a plausible explanation for the room that seems awkward in its placement, she runs her hands along the cold cement and the faded scribbled names. One appears to be Wilson but the last name is unclear. A voice from behind her booms, “Wilson Jones.” A stunned Vicki turns to see a tall, dark man with full lips and bulging muscles.

Excerpt:
“How did you get in?”

“Front door was open. You know, you really should be more careful. You never know when someone like me might take advantage of someone like you.”

Vicki took a step back. “What do you mean…someone like you?”

Wilson motioned toward the empty room. “A runaway slave.”

“You’re not a runaway slave. That was years ago.”

“Ah, yes, well, perhaps I should have said, “The great-grandson of a runaway slave.”

“Do you live around here?” Vicki whispered.

“Next door, in the abandoned house.”

“You mean you don’t own it?”

“You obviously didn’t do your homework when shopping for houses. Didn’t you wonder why the price of this monstrosity was so low?”

“Well, sure, but I just thought it was a good deal.”

“Oh, it is…it is a very good deal. The neighborhood is full of squatters such as myself.”

Vicki felt uneasy with this man in her house and she wanted to ask him to leave, but she also wanted to know why he had come to her house at such an odd time of the night. “Why did you come into my house?”

“Curiosity, I suppose. I watched you move in and I know you live here alone.” His eyes seemed to become darker as he flashed his white teeth in a wide smile.

“What do you want from me?”

“Ah, the pretty white princess is just like all of the rest, is she?”

***

Vicki was lifted easily into Wilson’s arms and he laid the petite woman down upon his bed. She felt safe and protected with this man whose skin was as dark as night. Vicki’s slender arms around him made Wilson feel like a man again, a feeling he thought he had been robbed of forever.

As they lay together, Vicki thought that Wilson was the perfect man. It was not until the light shone through the window the following morning that she realized what she had done. She had slept in the arms of a black man. That was taboo in her world, something so forbidden that women who were seen with men such as Wilson were often shunned in public places. Vicki smiled sweetly and told him that she needed to go home.

“See you around, Vicki.” Wilson turned on the shower and closed the bathroom door. With the water streaming down his face, he could almost ignore the tears that were mixed with it.

GENERATIONS: Birth of an American Aristocracy

Generations: Birth of an American Aristocracy

An epic novel of wealth and fame, politics and adulterous romances, murder and intrigue, along with family secrets that each generation swears to take to the grave.
***
An idealist, Jack Gilbert travels to California where life’s events make him a witness to and participant in the intrigues and brutality of war. Involved in espionage, he becomes an adulterer, a secret he vows to take to his grave. Following the war, his life of love, politics, and growing wealth compromises his idealism, and as each new generation of Gilberts emerges, there is little realization that the family’s wealth has come at great expense to others. But greed, like a moving train, is hard to stop.

Excerpt:
Joshette unlocks the door and leads Jack inside. She shows him the files where the documents are kept and Jack quickly begins taking pictures. In a few minutes he is ready to leave, but Joshette hears noise outside of the office. “It’s the janitor. He will open the door, turn the light on, and begin to clean.”

She begins to undress and tells Jack to quickly remove his pants and jacket. She sits on the desk and parts her legs. In the ambient light, Jack sees a smile on Joshette’s face as she says, “Do you need some help, or can you perform under these conditions?”

Jack silently and quickly complies, as the door to the office slowly opens. When the janitor sees them, he immediately exits and closes the door.

Joshette asks, “Are you going to finish?”

Jack lowers her onto the desk and the passion is immediate. He puts his arm under her head and pulls her gently closer to him.

Afterward, they go to the Colonial Hotel for dinner and drinks, but are relatively silent. Jack breaks the silence, “What happened goes far beyond our duties…”

Joshette interrupts, “You don’t need to make an excuse for my behavior. We did what we had to do to get out of a situation. Afterward, I wanted sex.”

“These are strange times in North Africa.” He kisses her gently on the lips and walks to his car. Struggling with his adulterous conduct, he attempts to justify what is happening on the war.

Jack’s son David is born in 1950, on the day the Korean War begins, the first military action of the cold war, and as the war drags on, Jack becomes wealthier and wealthier. When it ends, some five million soldiers and civilians are dead, and Jack feels a degree of responsibility for the deaths. It is, after all, some of his businesses that manufacture weapons for war.

Years later, Jack’s son David departs for the second military action of the cold war – Viet Nam.

*****

The bush is thick, and David and the others slow down for fear of being ambushed. David’s buddy Freddy continues on and is quickly lost from view. After a few minutes David moves ahead alone to search for him. He moves silently, and sees movement in the bushes. He sees Freddy on his knees over a dead Viet Cong. He appears to be cutting his head off. David looks around, sees no one, then speaks just loud enough for Freddy to hear. Freddy stops what he is doing and motions for David to come over. Looking at the dead Viet Cong with half of his head cut off, David says, “What in the hell are you doing?”

Freddy has a surprised look on his face as he replies, “I’m killing the enemy and making an example of him to any other Viet Cong who comes into this village. When I remove his head, I’m going to put it on a pole as an example of what will happen to the next Viet Cong.”

David is stupefied at Freddy’s words. “What you are doing is a death sentence for the people of this village. When Charley sees that head on a pole he will think the villagers did it, and they will kill everyone in the village to set an example to everyone who opposes them.”

Freddy doesn’t respond.

David wonders if Freddy is a psychopathic killer or if he really believes the only solution to winning is to kill every one of the enemy. “You are always the first to go after Charley, but they never seem to survive once you get to them.”

Freddy smiles back. “Why would you want to capture scum like that? I don’t take prisoners, unless I’m told to.”

“But you seem to enjoy killing them.”

“I do enjoy killing them, and I hope this war never ends.”

Several days after they return from leave in Saigon, they are on a patrol and as usual, Freddy is in the front of the shooting. He is unseen, and right behind him is David. David sees the Viet Cong firing at Freddy and Freddy firing back. Freddy is shot and bleeding out from a wound that severed the main artery in his leg. David takes a towel and puts it over Freddy’s leg to apply pressure, but he is hesitant about applying enough pressure to stop the flow of blood. This is his chance to prevent Freddy from committing another atrocity.

Freddy can feel that no pressure is being applied. He looks up at David, smiles and says, “Welcome to the club.”

Dark Master

Erotic Romance

Erotic Romance

Kessa had never known a man like Master. He took her breath away with his mysterious sexiness and spontaneity. The night they met, Kessa had been invited to the house of the Ritual by a lone hitchhiker she dared to pick up on a gloomy rainy night. Master had watched from a dark corner as man after man begged to touch Kessa, tried to kiss her, and attempted to charm his way into her life. The young woman could not resist the reclusive charmer and she left with him that night, though she knew nothing about him or the dark life he led.

Excerpt:
Kessa’s car came to a stop in front of the house and Ace wasted no time hurrying to the door. They slopped through the rain and the slippery mud and Kessa followed Ace inside. He took her jacket and disappeared into a small room. As Kessa waited, she looked around and realized that the inside of the house was no better than the outside. The walls were bare, with torn wallpaper hanging loose, and the furniture was worn and filthy.

When Ace came out of the room, he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and Kessa thought he was absolutely gorgeous. The man’s hair was black, his eyes a deep blue, and he was very well proportioned, at least what could be seen of him. Still, there was an air of mystery that surrounded him. He did not smile, and when he spoke to Kessa, he ordered her.

“Come with me, Kessa,” he said, not bothering to wait for a response.

Kessa followed Ace through the dark damp house, the floor creaking as they walked. She swore the creaking sounded like an eerie message, but she couldn’t make out what it was trying to say. They turned and walked down a long hallway, with Ace glancing over his shoulder from time to time to make certain that Kessa was following him. At the end of the hallway Ace opened an old rotted door and led Kessa down a long staircase to what appeared to be a darkened room. In the corner of the room was one lone naked red light bulb. It was somewhat blinding in the darkness and Kessa blinked her eyes several times as they adjusted to the light. In the shadows she could see the naked outlines of men and women, and in the darkness of the room the men and women became real and passed by her one at a time. Some of the men reached out and tried to touch her, but Ace would not allow it. He whispered seductively to her, “You are very beautiful, Kessa. Everyone wants you.”

******

Kessa slept alone in Master’s bed. It was a fitful sleep, filled with strange dreams. She dreamed of when she had first met Master and she remembered the men who had come to her for nothing more than a chance to touch her. Master had come to her late that night, waiting before making his move. But his move had been much different than the others. The mysterious man had taken her to his private sanctuary in the mountains. Master had promised her everything in exchange for only one.

Arousing the Legacy

Young Adult Paranormal Mystery

Young Adult Paranormal Mystery

The man who came to Colville knew there was something unique about the young men he was ordered to observe. They had been able to ward off a curse and survive a vampire attack. The man had spent most of the day observing the town and keeping an eye on the young men. One of them was ill and the man knew why. The other one had no idea he was being followed, but as far as the man was concerned, he was a below average werewolf at best. Still, there had to be a reason for a vampire to show up in Colville, other than creating two werewolf slaves.

Arousing the Legacy centers around the small town of Colville which appears to have been chosen by a paranormal power for a very deliberate purpose. It is up to a small group of friends to discover what that purpose is and why their town was chosen, all while encountering vampires, werewolves, and zombies, and fearing for their lives. But could one of their own be among the paranormal?

Excerpt:
The woman could hear the two young men perfectly and she was trying hard not to turn around. ‘Mere mortals,’ she thought as she walked. One of them wolf whistled and the woman stopped walking.

“I think that bombshell heard you.”

“You think she will come back to spank me?” Cory asked in a flirty voice as he passed his hand through his brown hair. “I’m all for it, if she does.”

The woman clenched her fists. “I don’t know, Cory,” laughed the boy. The two of them smiled as they watched the woman walk toward them. “I got this,” said Cory as he stood up straight. The woman stopped in front of them and they smiled at her. “So,” began Cory. He took a step toward her. He could smell leather and perfume. “You looking for something exciting to…” Cory yelled as he felt the pain.

“Hey, you psycho!” yelled Dave as he took hold of her arm. He tried to pull her away but couldn’t. The woman gave a smile and her eyes turned from blue to red as Dave stood still in fear. “What…what are you?”

“Don’t tell me you guys won’t play with me now?” asked the woman sweetly. “Now what to do with you both?” she asked. She loved playing with her food. She was about to kill them when she smelled something…her partner. He would never allow her to have fun on the job. She knew he was close even if she couldn’t see him. He was an expert in hiding and if he had allowed her to catch his scent, it meant that he wanted her to notice him.

“You are no fun,” she said. She knew he could hear him. She let go of the two young men and they fell to the ground, still in pain. She rolled her eyes at them and walked away. A few seconds later she watched as a black car came to a halt.

“Get in,” said a tall black haired man from inside of the car. The woman rolled her eyes and sat down in the passenger’s seat.

“Why did you stop me?” she asked as she looked at the houses they drove past.

Heroes Never Die

Romantic Suspense/CIA Thriller

Romantic Suspense/CIA Thriller

Kyle Robertson is a CIA operative, and crushing the enemy is what he does best. A jilted ex-lover, he lost his ladylove, Stephanie, to a Major in the Armed Services, but he knows that if he waits long enough, payback time will arrive. When war breaks out and Major Brian Fairchild receives orders to ship out, Kyle is given a dangerous and deadly order that, if executed flawlessly, will make him a hero in the eyes of the President. Blackmailing someone into carrying out the plan without divulging the secrets of the mission is his top priority, and Stephanie is the ideal choice. The young woman’s journey to exotic places leads to intrigue and terror when she discovers that she has been set up, and she finds herself engaged in a fierce and deceptive battle in which the prize is life.

Excerpt:
“Hamid is anti-Western, and he lives behind a shield of armed guards, so getting close enough to make the hit presents a challenge. He is deeply entrenched in tradition, but he has one weakness.”

“And that is?” Barry questioned.

“He has a fascination with beautiful women.”

“I’m turning this job over to you, Kyle, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s impossible.”

“Not impossible,” Kyle replied with cool confidence. “Just a challenge.” Crushing his enemy was what Kyle did best. He leaned back in his chair with his arms folded behind his head to scheme the operation. He unlocked the drawer to his desk and pulled out a framed picture of Stephanie. He looked into her beautiful face and smiled triumphantly. You made a big mistake when you married Brian. Finally, the time was ripe and in his control.

******

“What’s going on here?”

“You’ve been set up, ladylove.”

“What are you talking about?”

“We need your help to carry out a dangerous operation. As I’m sure you already know, Saudi Arabia has closed its air base to our military. We need the base in order to put an end to this war, and we have every reason to believe that the Crown Prince would agree to let us occupy the base if given the ruling power. But first we need to take the king for a ride. That’s where you come in.”

“I really don’t have the time.” She headed for the door.

“Let me ask you something,” he called after her. “Did Brian make it to Turkey as scheduled?”

Stephanie’s steps came to a chilling halt. Everything suddenly made sense. Kyle was the one responsible for Brian receiving orders to Turkey. She swung around to face him.

“You’re much too beautiful to be standing there with your mouth hanging open,” he taunted her. “That’s one of the reasons you’re so perfect for this job – you’re a tantalizing beauty, and you’re an expert marksman, or should I say markswoman? You’re a crack shot.”

Stephanie’s skin sizzled with fierce anger. “So you’re the one responsible for taking Brian from me.”

“My sweet little Stephanie,” he said as he tossed back his head and laughed. “Sometimes you can be so naive. It was so easy to arrange for Brian’s timely departure. Think how easy it would be to arrange for his timely death.”

Stephanie’s insides screamed with alarm.

******

With jet-black hair, penetrating dark eyes, and a full rugged mouth, the king looked as commanding as his royal robes. She wondered if he could see the fear in her eyes.

“You are very beautiful,” he said. Stephanie didn’t like the hungry look in his eyes. “Come to me,” he ordered.

Stephanie stared at him, not knowing what to do. He was making a pass at her, and unless she wanted to jump out of a moving train and die of thirst in the desert, there was nowhere to run. She cautiously rose to her feet. He reached for her hand and pulled her down to his lap.

“Twice I have tried to kiss you,” he said as he ran his fingers through her hair. “And twice you have slipped away from me. I will not let you get away this time.”

“You’re flirting with me,” she said, pretending to be shocked to fend him off.

“No, I am all finished flirting.” He folded her body back into his arms and kissed her.

Stephanie wriggled out of his arms and jumped to her feet. Abdullah rose to his feet, reached for her arm, and turned her around to face him. “Why did you pull away from me? Surely you know by now how much I want you.”

Stephanie had to think of something fast.

Plucked

Werewolf/Shifter Romance

Werewolf/Shifter Romance

The woods behind the old mansion camouflage the young woman well as she scavenges for nuts and berries. Life among the animals is the only life she has known, until the night when the reclusive owner of the estate hears a strange rustling as he hunts for his nightly feast. The man is no ordinary man. He is the result of an experiment gone terribly awry, and he does not welcome the intrusion into his life of solitude.

Excerpt:
Roan flipped the light switch on and off a couple of times and poured himself a strong one. He knew what would happen when the glass was empty. It never failed that sleep overcame the recluse and he took to his bed. What occurred during his sleep was mostly unknown to the man, and what he did know frightened him. When the night was as black as pitch, he walked out the back door and into the woods. Covered with thick fur and with claws as sharp as knives, he searched for food, feasting on small animals, nuts and berries, until his eyes detected the slightest hint that daylight was approaching. Then he returned to the house and his bed, waking up once again in the body of a man. He feared what he had become and he blamed the liquor, but it was no ordinary alcoholic beverage that was the culprit. Roan was barely a man when he was plucked from his family for an experimental procedure that had gone terribly awry.

When the shadows of the night closed in around the old house, Roan couldn’t shake the sense of dread and sadness he felt, and so he drank. But the monster within him would never be gone. The aftermath of his nightly excursions was chilling. On occasion, he would venture into the woods in the daytime and when he did he found carcasses of dead animals he had killed the night before. The footsteps he encountered were that of an animal, but he knew they belonged to him. He was the man beast who had killed the defenseless creatures. He felt safe within the mansion and he knew the world was safe without him in it.

Scheme Weaver

Romantic Suspense

Romantic Suspense

Sadie believes she has found true happiness when she meets a young veterinarian. Her ex, however, harbors bad feelings toward her and resents her ability to move on without him. When Sadie agrees to visit him in an effort to provide some form of closure for the two of them, she discovers that her ex has become a wealthy man in a very shady business. He makes her an offer that she may not be able to refuse without risking her life or the life of her new lover.

Excerpt:
Sadie opened the door and saw her ex-boyfriend for the first time in over a year. He threw his arms around her and kissed her on the mouth before she had a chance to stop him. Closing the door with a kick, he noticed the flowers on the dresser. “Mmm, I know I didn’t send those, so someone must have a new beau.”

“I met a man recently,” she said timidly. Sadie felt shy in the presence of her ex, and he seemed to have more confidence than she remembered. “You seem different, Lin.”

“Do I? I’m not the shy guy you remember?”

“No.”

Lin pulled Sadie to him and kissed her possessively on the mouth. “I’m a businessman now, Sadie, a wheeler and dealer, and I usually get what I want.”

******

“Come to my room for dinner. I’m having some friends over.”

Sadie reluctantly agreed. When she knocked on Lin’s door, it wasn’t Lin who opened it. “Sadie, come in. Lin has told us so much about you.” Sadie walked into the room and was very quickly handed a glass of hard liquor that made her cough.

“What is it?” she asked.

“Nothing but the best,” Lin spoke up, appearing out of nowhere it seemed. He put his arm around her and bragged, “This is Sadie.”

“Ah, yes, come and sit with me, Sadie,” one of the men said.

“Sadie, Mr. Madison is very wealthy and very influential.” Lin gave her a stern look, so she sat down beside the stranger. “Lin and I have started a business together, and you can be a part of our grand enterprise.”

Sadie couldn’t figure these guys out. What did they want?

“Ah, my dear Sadie, Mr. Madison and I know all about your, well, love of pharmaceuticals. I hate to call it an addiction, but I may as well call it what it is. You are addicted, aren’t you, Sadie?”

Sadie gulped and tried to play it cool. “I don’t have an addiction.”

Lin sat down on the opposite side of Sadie so that she was sandwiched between the two men. He put his hand on her thigh, daring her to remove it. “Now, Sadie, we can quibble about what it really is all we want, but according to a Miss Karen Browning, who discovered a full bottle of Percocet as well as a half full bottle of Klonopin upon your sudden departure, you have an addiction. She immediately reported the drugs to the school authorities. It’s a good thing you decided to drop out. You would have been dismissed had you not left voluntarily.”

Sadie was livid. It was just like the uppity rich girl to rat her out. Karen could have thrown the bottles away, but she had no doubt gained big points with the dean. “What has that got to do with you two?”

Intentions

Mystery/Romance

Mystery/Romance

Kevin had the best of intentions when he fell in love with Yvette, but he was a young musician at the time and naïve to the ways of the world. Yvette was the daughter of a former KGB officer whose intentions were self-serving and hedonistic. When Kevin is invited to showcase his prized group of musicians at Cyber World, a new theme park eerily designed by Yvette’s father, he fears that he may have been led into an international trap. He also realizes that one of his musicians may be his only way out of his former lover’s clutches, but can he put the young woman in danger to save himself? His intentions may be good, but the road to hell was paved with good intentions.

Excerpt:
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”

Rachel jumped and held onto the balcony. “Maestro?”

“Didn’t mean to scare you, Rachel.”

Rachel took a deep breath. Had she been so preoccupied that she didn’t hear Mr. Scarsdale enter the room? It was if the man had appeared from nowhere. Kevin walked back into the room and Rachel slowly followed behind him.

“Where’s Charlotte?”

“She was reassigned. You will be staying here alone. You don’t mind, do you, Rachel?” The look he gave her frightened her.

“No, I don’t mind.”

He left the room and Rachel lay down on the bed. She was tired. A few minutes later Maestro entered her room again.

“Do you have a key to my room?”

“Yes, Rachel, I do.”

******

Rachel sat quietly beside Maestro as the taxi made a sharp turn, nearly capsizing, and entered a narrow waterway. When the boat emerged, music played from large speakers in the shape of thumb drives and the flashing CyB sign dwarfed them. The two of them stepped into what could be described as an eerie world of the future. With buildings of shiny steel and fake clouds hovering above them to represent cloud computing, Cyber World looked like it belonged on the set of a horror film. To Rachel’s right was a restaurant that looked like the inside of one of the very first computers.

“Walk with me, Rachel.”

Rachel turned her attention to Maestro and they walked through what appeared to be a timeline of sorts of cyber technology from the advent of the internet to present day. Only one ride was going, a rollercoaster with each car in the shape of a computer mouse.

“What do you think, Rachel?”

Rachel stared at Maestro. “I guess it’s not what I was expecting.”

The sinister laughter made Rachel cringe. “Nothing ever is, my dear.”

Coming Home

Contemporary Romance

Contemporary Romance

When Melissa notices the silhouette of a man she recognizes as the man she loved many years ago, old feelings come flooding back instantly, but she has no idea what to say to him. When he approaches her and the two of them begin reminiscing about old times, Melissa learns that this man she loved so many years ago may hold more than her heart. This man may hold the many secrets and questions surrounding her past.

Excerpt:
“Why, Melissa? Why did you disappear?”

Melissa put her arms around Todd, folding them across his chest. She spoke softly, yet distinctly and certainly. “I did not disappear. You knew where I was the entire time. You could have come to me.”

“I had to stay behind. I had to convince them that what they had seen was not what they had thought it was. But you, you got to live the life of the free spirit in Los Angeles. “I missed you, Melissa. You must have married. You have sons.”

Melissa continued to speak softly and slowly to her first love who continued to face away from her. “I was not celibate all of these years, as I am certain you have not been either.”

Todd’s heart was breaking at the thought of Melissa loving another man. “Did you love him, Melissa, the way you loved…?”

“The way that I loved you? There will never will be a love like ours.”

******

“They’re gone, Melissa. We were orphans, all of us who were taken in by them and their lies. We were like the children of the Scandinavian countries when Hitler was determined to create a world of blue eyed blonde haired children. The players of the game were different, but the sadistic game was the same.”

Melissa squinted her eyes for a brief second, forming a look of disbelief on her face. “Where did they go, the South of France? Did they extort money from unsuspecting charitable groups? Was the shame too much for them to bear?”

Colville – The Cold

Paranormal Mystery

Paranormal Mystery

When a group of friends come upon a car crashed into a tree, they are surprised to find that the woman inside is alive. She tells the group that she and her co-worker had been filming the abandoned Singleton residence for a news report when it grew cold inside the house. They left, and walked toward the swamp not far from the abandoned abode. The swamp was frozen, with thinner ice in places and frozen footprints emanating from the swamp and going into the forest…human footprints. Thinking that the prints were made by kids as a joke, the two reporters followed them and noticed what appeared to be an animal or a human zoom into the trees. Assuming that the creature was hiding, the man approached it, and the couple found themselves surrounded by bodies staring at them. The news duo turned and ran back to their car, where they found another creature preventing them from getting away. The creature grabbed the man’s neck as the woman screamed and watched helplessly as the creature dragged her co-worker into the forest… The group of friends are mesmerized by the woman’s story and they set out to solve the mystery.

Excerpt:
It was a cold night and a figure was walking towards the swamp, treading so lightly that it made no footprints. It was if the figure was floating, barely touching the ground. It went through the trees, its pale face coming in and out of the moonlight as it walked below the branches overhead. The swamp came into view and it stopped an inch away from the frozen layer of murky water. It turned around. No one was following her. She had made certain of that when she froze the rocks outside the hole in the cave. Satisfied, she stepped onto the frozen layer of ice covering the surface of the swamp. She knew it would not break. She had made herself light enough to walk on it. She looked up at the dark sky and rested her gaze upon the moon shining above her. She lifted her arms as if to fly and began whispering in a language as old as time. She knew the words well. She had recited the incantations before and now she was whispering them again.

The air became cold and the leaves of the trees began to rustle. She heard a howl from somewhere far away. Why was she doing this? Why was she putting her friends in danger? She did not know. All she knew was that there was some higher power making her do it all and it wanted more. It wanted revenge and it wanted it now. At first she had tried to resist the calling, but she was too weak, and she could not fight it. She didn’t want to fight it. Her whispering became louder and the ice around her began to crack. She saw something deep inside the swamp start to break the ice from below. The air around her became heavy, as if someone was there with her, a sinister unseen presence. She did not stop and began to whisper her incantations faster. The sheet of ice gave way and a decayed hand broke the surface of the water.
