The Game Master of Somerville

The Game Master
Unable to resist a mystery, Jerry uncovers an on-line gaming site referring to a ‘secret place’ for young people who feel they don’t fit in and a game master who promises them a world where they will belong. When the daily news headline reads, “Pritchett, James (31), Murderer, Escapes from Prison,” Jerry’s mind begins to race, and after a bit of research, he finds more about the elusive Mr. Pritchett. Guilty of murdering the Watts family, he escaped prison and was last seen not far from the city of Somerville. But is the escaped prisoner the game master?

Excerpt:
“What’s this game?” I pointed at the name, “The Clash of Magic and Swords?”

“Beats me,” said Justin. Nick shook his head as well.

“It’s an on-line multi-player strategy game,” said Kate. “It has a lot of fantasy elements in it.”

“People play on-line games,” said Justin. “There’s nothing weird about it.”

He was right. “Look for something else,” I said. I wanted to find something important on Will’s laptop, something that would give us a hint about who had taken him or if he was in contact with someone.

There were pages where Will talked about going out on his own and finding a ‘secret place’ to share with his friends, especially Stephen. I read one of the entries to myself. It was written about six months ago. “I wish I could find a place, a place I could call my own. I would be surrounded by my friends and we would play as long as we wanted. Maybe someday I’ll find it and then I’ll go there.” I read the rest of the pages. William sounded obsessed with finding his own ‘secret place.’ I read an entry that was made a month ago. “I think I’ve found it. Stephen and I came to know about it around the same time. I can’t wait to go there. He said he’ll take both of us. I’m so excited. We are Orphans of the World!”

“Who’s he?” I asked myself. At first I thought it was Stephen, but re-reading the last line again told me there was a third person involved.

*****

“A Clash of Magic and Swords,” she answered enthusiastically. “I made a lot of friends through this. Have you heard of it?” she asked.

“No…I…” and then I remembered. I had seen the game in both Stephen’s and Will’s history when I was in their rooms. Stephen played the game on his laptop while Will played it on his desktop computer. My mind felt as if it was trying to tell me something but I couldn’t make out what.

“Can you find out how many people in Somerville play this game?” I asked.

Ana nodded at me. “The game has all kinds of stats in it,” she said. “You can know more about the game from here,” she answered, opening a menu for me.

“Thanks,” I said. I looked at the menu in front of me. It had all sorts of information. The final version of the game was made available to the public six months ago. According to the statistics, Ana’s profile showed more than a hundred players from Somerville. There was also a list of different teams or guilds players could join.

My eyes noticed the guild named “Orphans Of The World.”

“That’s a very powerful guild,” said Ana. “It’s very exclusive.”

“Can you show it to me?” I asked.

“We do not belong here. Our place is below the sun and moon. Those of you who wish to join, come open the circle to our world.”

GENERATIONS: Birth of an American Aristocracy

Generations: Birth of an American Aristocracy

An epic novel of wealth and fame, politics and adulterous romances, murder and intrigue, along with family secrets that each generation swears to take to the grave.
***
An idealist, Jack Gilbert travels to California where life’s events make him a witness to and participant in the intrigues and brutality of war. Involved in espionage, he becomes an adulterer, a secret he vows to take to his grave. Following the war, his life of love, politics, and growing wealth compromises his idealism, and as each new generation of Gilberts emerges, there is little realization that the family’s wealth has come at great expense to others. But greed, like a moving train, is hard to stop.

Excerpt:
Joshette unlocks the door and leads Jack inside. She shows him the files where the documents are kept and Jack quickly begins taking pictures. In a few minutes he is ready to leave, but Joshette hears noise outside of the office. “It’s the janitor. He will open the door, turn the light on, and begin to clean.”

She begins to undress and tells Jack to quickly remove his pants and jacket. She sits on the desk and parts her legs. In the ambient light, Jack sees a smile on Joshette’s face as she says, “Do you need some help, or can you perform under these conditions?”

Jack silently and quickly complies, as the door to the office slowly opens. When the janitor sees them, he immediately exits and closes the door.

Joshette asks, “Are you going to finish?”

Jack lowers her onto the desk and the passion is immediate. He puts his arm under her head and pulls her gently closer to him.

Afterward, they go to the Colonial Hotel for dinner and drinks, but are relatively silent. Jack breaks the silence, “What happened goes far beyond our duties…”

Joshette interrupts, “You don’t need to make an excuse for my behavior. We did what we had to do to get out of a situation. Afterward, I wanted sex.”

“These are strange times in North Africa.” He kisses her gently on the lips and walks to his car. Struggling with his adulterous conduct, he attempts to justify what is happening on the war.

Jack’s son David is born in 1950, on the day the Korean War begins, the first military action of the cold war, and as the war drags on, Jack becomes wealthier and wealthier. When it ends, some five million soldiers and civilians are dead, and Jack feels a degree of responsibility for the deaths. It is, after all, some of his businesses that manufacture weapons for war.

Years later, Jack’s son David departs for the second military action of the cold war – Viet Nam.

*****

The bush is thick, and David and the others slow down for fear of being ambushed. David’s buddy Freddy continues on and is quickly lost from view. After a few minutes David moves ahead alone to search for him. He moves silently, and sees movement in the bushes. He sees Freddy on his knees over a dead Viet Cong. He appears to be cutting his head off. David looks around, sees no one, then speaks just loud enough for Freddy to hear. Freddy stops what he is doing and motions for David to come over. Looking at the dead Viet Cong with half of his head cut off, David says, “What in the hell are you doing?”

Freddy has a surprised look on his face as he replies, “I’m killing the enemy and making an example of him to any other Viet Cong who comes into this village. When I remove his head, I’m going to put it on a pole as an example of what will happen to the next Viet Cong.”

David is stupefied at Freddy’s words. “What you are doing is a death sentence for the people of this village. When Charley sees that head on a pole he will think the villagers did it, and they will kill everyone in the village to set an example to everyone who opposes them.”

Freddy doesn’t respond.

David wonders if Freddy is a psychopathic killer or if he really believes the only solution to winning is to kill every one of the enemy. “You are always the first to go after Charley, but they never seem to survive once you get to them.”

Freddy smiles back. “Why would you want to capture scum like that? I don’t take prisoners, unless I’m told to.”

“But you seem to enjoy killing them.”

“I do enjoy killing them, and I hope this war never ends.”

Several days after they return from leave in Saigon, they are on a patrol and as usual, Freddy is in the front of the shooting. He is unseen, and right behind him is David. David sees the Viet Cong firing at Freddy and Freddy firing back. Freddy is shot and bleeding out from a wound that severed the main artery in his leg. David takes a towel and puts it over Freddy’s leg to apply pressure, but he is hesitant about applying enough pressure to stop the flow of blood. This is his chance to prevent Freddy from committing another atrocity.

Freddy can feel that no pressure is being applied. He looks up at David, smiles and says, “Welcome to the club.”

Missing in Somerville

New Adult Murder Mystery

New Adult Murder Mystery

The beautiful young bride of the town’s wealthiest man has been missing for several months and rumors of her whereabouts are rampant. Some speak of murder at the hands of her husband. Others claim that the young beauty died at the hands of a jealous ex-boyfriend. She could have run away, but why would a woman throw away a life of luxury? When a group of friends begin to search for her, they quickly discover that their lives are in danger by those determined to keep the woman’s whereabouts unknown.

Excerpt:
I inserted the key into the key hole and opened the front door. Without a word, Ash and I walked inside. The hall was huge and decorated with expensive looking furniture, and decoration pieces made of crystal lined the shelves. Pictures of Nigel’s forefathers hung on the walls. The people in the pictures had an air of importance around them, similar to Nigel’s.

“You look downstairs,” I told Ash. “I’ll go and check upstairs. Meet you back here in a few minutes.”

“What am I supposed to look for?” Ash asked in a whisper.

“Don’t know,” I answered. I wasn’t even sure what to look for myself.

I began ascending the huge staircase. A huge portrait of Mr. Nigel and Devona greeted me at the landing. They looked happy to me. Nigel looked less serious and arrogant and Devona was beautiful in a pink gown. Giving the picture another look, I walked to my left and opened the door to a bedroom. I opened the drawer next to the bed and found a photo album full of pictures from Nigel’s and Devona’s wedding. The more I looked, the more their marriage appeared as if it had been a private affair. The entire photo album showed only the bride and her groom.

*****

It took me a few minutes to realize that I was bound to a chair. “People know that I’m here,” I yelled at him.

He didn’t seem to listen and gently stroked Devona’s long blonde hair. I looked around the attic. Jars filled with red liquid lined the wall behind Devona. I noticed my cell phone near her chair smashed into pieces.

“Why?” I asked as I tried to loosen my hands.

“Devona is special,” he said, and I watched him pick up a syringe from a table. “My master told me that.”

“Who is your master?” I asked. He has gone totally crazy.

“Shut up!” he yelled at me. “Do not speak of my master with your filthy mouth.”

I tried to move my feet, but they were bound as well. I turned my head. There wasn’t anything sharp in my reach either. I needed to escape from this place.

“It was my master’s doing,” he said, pouring the blood into a jar.

I noticed that the attic door behind me was open. If only I could move the chair a little. I slowly began to push the chair toward the attic stairs.

“Stop!”

I was grabbed by my hair and couldn’t catch my balance.

“You imbecile!” he yelled. “My master will be proud to hear that you are dead,” he said, and I saw him raise the knife.

Penal Island

Erotic Fiction

Erotic Fiction

When two escaped convicts find refuge on a deserted island, they think they are alone until they discover a woman on an abandoned ship. They take her to their makeshift home and do with her as they please. When they later discover her dead at the hands of presumed cannibals, they try to escape the island but find themselves in a situation worse than prison. Their carnal desires, previously kept in check, surface quickly again on Penal Island.

Excerpt:
Mika crawled into the small space and onto the cot in the corner. She had no idea what these two lunatics were planning to do with her, but she was tired. She lay awake and waited for the loud snoring from the big man on the upper deck. She pulled on a pair of worn jeans and an old shirt, slowly crept up the stairs, and snuck away easily. Darkness surrounded her and the shadows took on the form of gargoyles but it did not make her turn around. The footsteps led to a cave with the entrance loosely covered with leaves and twigs. Undaunted, she began pushing them aside as best she could. She had cleared only a few when she felt a hand grab the back of her hair and pull her away.

“Oww, stop!” she begged as she was nearly knocked to the ground.

“Well, what have we here?”

“I’m Mika.”

“So you were the one that got away. Come inside.” Brushing the foliage quickly aside, Carver led Mika into his dark home where she could not see where she was going. The big man pushed her down onto a pile of what she assumed was blankets and forced her mouth open with his own. The thick thighs forced her legs apart and Carver forced the oversized jeans down Mika’s slender legs. She was his to dominate.

Lured

Lured

Erotic Romance

The resort offering more money and perks than Tiffany can resist houses an evil secret.  Money exchanges hands for much more than room and board.  Quitting her steady job on a whim for what is promised to be a once in a lifetime experience, Tiffany loads up her car and heads out.  Stumbling upon a secretive erotic crime ring, she tries to find a way out of it, but the sly old woman in charge hired Tiffany for a very specific reason and she knows where the young woman is at all times.

Excerpt:
Tiffany noticed the sign announcing the Jag’s Head Resort and turned onto a winding narrow road.  The resort, when she finally arrived at its gated entrance, was grand in scale.  Lit up like a fireworks display on a summer night in her home state of Oklahoma, the resort seemed grossly out of place in the wilderness.  Tiffany parked her car and opened the door.  The chimes dinged and clanged and a woman came out from behind the counter.

“Welcome to Jag’s Head.”

Tiffany shook the woman’s hand, and the woman greeted her none too warmly.  Tiffany’s shoes made an eerie sound as the heels clicked on each step of the back stairway.  This part of the resort was far from beautiful.  It was barren and reminded Tiffany of an old hospital slated for demolition.

“You may unpack if you like.  Your work day will begin tomorrow.”

******

“Today you will greet visitors.  When a woman with hair the color of late autumn leaves and eyes a brilliant blue comes to us, invite her to join you in the special suite.  Tell her how pretty she is and let her know that a handsome gentleman requests her company for the evening.”

“Why?”

“It is your job, my dear.”

Tiffany personally waited on the young woman whose name was Jessica, not allowing her the chance to get away.  Mrs. Turnkey was too scary to risk going against her orders.  She helped her with her bag and showed her to the room which Mrs. Turnkey had specified.

Jessica was so taken with the room that she did not hear the door close when Tiffany left.  She unpacked her small bag and lay upon the bed.  The dessert she had eaten had been much too filling, a rich strawberry and chocolate cream pie, and once the sugar rush had worn off Jessica fell asleep.

Moments later, Mrs. Turnkey opened the door and a man in his late forties walked into the room.  “What do you think, Mr. Burris?”

The man’s eyes grew wide at the sight of the beautiful woman.  “I think I hit the jackpot.”  This was beyond his imagination.  And she was his forever.  The deal had been made and Jessica’s fate was sealed.

******

When morning came, Tiffany knocked on Jessica’s door to invite her to breakfast.  After several knocks and no response, she pounded on the door, waking Mrs. Turnkey in the room adjacent.

In her robe, the old woman inquired innocently, “My dear, isn’t it a bit early for such ruckus?”

“Did Jessica leave already?  It’s only seven.”

The old lady yawned.  “Yes she did, dear.  She said to tell you thank you for your kindness.”  The woman went back into her room, closing and locking the door behind her, and smiling at Tiffany’s naivete.

The Chalet

The Chalet

Murder Mystery/Romantic Paranormal

When Madeline honors her mother’s dying wish and returns to The Chalet, she discovers the true secret of the old mansion; a seductive spirit whose undying love has waited decades to claim her for its own.

Excerpt:
The Chalet was not just a walk down the street.  It was located in Minnesota near a large forest, surrounded on three sides by state land.  How many hunters and campers got seduced to go behind those great twin oak doors I’ll never guess.  But I know that at least a few did; the ones who got reported to my family over the years.  What they saw, I’m not sure.  Perhaps it was Madeline herself, or the force that remained of her, since she had died in that house 40 years earlier.

The Chalet had been a gift from an admirer who hoped to woo Madeline.  Joseph Martelli was not the kind of person you said no to, even if you were a big star like Madeline.  He controlled a big section of the Chicago mob.  He also loved to trophy hunt, and he took to the Minnesota woods every winter to do just that.  The Chalet had been Martelli’s place before he had given it to Madeline lock, stock, and barrel.  Just why a pure blood Italian of seven generations had gone overboard for a black singer wasn’t understandable, not with a wife and a mistress already.  Maybe it had been her music.  Madeline’s voice was pure magic.  Or maybe Martelli had done enough evil here over the years that the place was haunted already and he wanted to dump it.

What happened behind the closed doors before the murder isn’t known, not conclusively.  Whatever disturbed Madeline’s packing also is not known.  But Madeline ran from it, whatever it was.

Review:
One Hell of a Spooky Story!
The Chalet had once been the home of the wealthy Centaurian family, but now it is in disrepair, its beautiful rooms shrouded in dust.  Strange things happen in the old house.  There are rumours of ghosts walking the empty rooms, and those who venture there often never return.  Is the house really haunted?  Or do the legends stem from the vivid imaginations of the local people?  Madeline´s mother has just inherited the house and it seems that Madeline is about to find out for herself.

This is one hell of a spooky story.  You imagine it is going to be a typical gothic ghost story with some tragic event in the past triggering the apparitions.  Wrong!  But I’m not going to tell you what is really going on.  You’ll have to read it for yourself.

PS.  I’d leave the light on if I were you.
— Jenny Twist
