He wanted to hate her, but how could he? He felt protective of the naïve young woman.
When Janie is sent to live among the Sioux, she is met by a proud native, as well as his sarcastic remarks and smirky grin. She wants to hate him, but she needs him to survive on the reservation, where life is filled with hardship. Beneath the hard exterior and demeaning words of the proud man lies a warrior with a heart of gold, but he will never allow the privileged young white woman to know the truth about him, or let down his guard in her presence, no matter how much she needs or wants him. He has other intentions.
“You want me to leave, don’t you? You have done nothing but give me a hard time since I got here, with your paleface comments, your smirky grins, your blame, and your backward thinking that I can’t do anything. You are a male chauvinist pig!” Janie could see him clench and unclench his fists and she knew she had gotten to him.
He turned around, pulled her to him, and locked his legs around hers. He placed his strong hands on her face and bent her head back. “You have no idea what I am thinking.”
She stared at him, her face smooshed between his warm brown hands. He towered over her and she felt as if she were shrinking by the second. The blue eyes that stared up at him were kind with their sparkle and their naïve brilliance, and he wished he could build a protective shield around her and keep her for his own.
“What… what is it now, Janie?”
“My face is squished.”
He wrapped her long brown hair around one hand and gently kissed her parted lips. He hadn’t meant for it to happen, but it had, and he didn’t want to stop. He kissed her with passion, and in a way that was new to young Janie. He couldn’t get enough of the woman whose skin was as white as snow. When he felt the slender arms on his back, he held her closer. When he finally found the strength to pry his lips from hers, he held her to his chest and kissed her neck.
Janie turned her head to breathe, and thought about how she had watched him sleeping earlier that day when she stopped at the door to his room. He had worn absolutely nothing, with no blanket covering any part of him. He was perfect… all of him. His chest was broad, his stomach like a washboard, his legs as thick as tree trunks, and what lay between them was meant to be hers and no one else’s. She had tiptoed quietly by, wishing she were not a virgin.

Called to her doctor’s office after hours, Leah finds him alone working on a novel. Asking for her assistance with the romantic scenes, he seems timid and not at all the man she is accustomed to seeing. When he confesses his darkest secret to her, she goes with him to his home and discovers the cold truth about the doctor.
Leah was a very perceptive woman, but lately she had been slipping, and she swore the little hamster inside her head had fallen off of his wheel. She received a strange phone call from a man she knew professionally, but about whom she knew precious little personally. An esteemed physician, Dr. Holcomb called early one morning and asked if she wanted to be part of a research study.
“I will do anything I can to help you,” Leah replied sincerely. Dr. Holcomb seemed hesitant to continue, so Leah spoke for him. “Do you want me to come to your office?” She heard the doctor clear his throat and he sounded a bit sheepish as he suggested a day and time.
Leah parked her car in one of the designated spots outside Dr. Holcomb’s office and entered the building. It was early evening, long after the office had closed. The door was locked, so she tapped lightly on the door.
“Leah, come in.” The doctor smiled, which he rarely did, when he saw the beautiful big blue eyes of the blonde haired woman he had called earlier that day. He seemed nervous, which was unusual, although at times he had seemed shy in her presence. He wasn’t wearing his white lab coat, but instead was dressed casually. “Let’s get started,” he said with an uneasy smile. He placed a hand on the small of Leah’s back and motioned for her to walk with him toward the end of the hallway and around the corner to his private office.
Leah looked around at the empty desks. It was too quiet. “Has everyone gone home?”
“Yes,” Dr. Holcomb responded as he closed the door to his office. Leah took a seat in a chair facing Dr. Holcomb’s desk, but the doctor didn’t sit in his desk chair. He sat down next to Leah and pulled his laptop computer from the corner of his desk. Placing a hand on Leah’s arm, he began. “I apologize. There is no study. Do you remember what we talked about at your last appointment?”
Leah felt her heart begin to race. She was dying and he had called her here after hours to tell her. No, that was stupid. She would have been asked to make an appointment if that were the case. “I…no, I guess I don’t remember.”

For years, Stephanie has kept her location a secret, but she knows that Tareef will never rest until he brings her to justice. Tareef’s day for revenge comes when Stephanie is taken hostage in an intricate plan to lure her out of hiding, but now her family is at risk of being executed as well. Her husband, Brian, must turn to his rival, Kyle Robertson, for help even though he knows that Kyle is still in love with his wife. When Kyle learns that Stephanie deliberately kept a secret from him that would have changed the course of their lives, he is devastated. Kyle is faced with the decision of choosing between saving millions of lives from a deadly sarin gas attack, or saving Stephanie. Hearts are broken, lives are restored, and Stephanie finds out the hard way that there are No Goodbyes in Heaven.
“Hello, Stephanie,” Kyle said in his cool Virginian accent. “It’s been a long time.” He was as handsome as ever, with blonde hair combed back over his head, his thick layers highlighting warm shades of brown. His full mouth framed a charming smile, and his wire rim glasses made his blue eyes look even more intelligent than he already was. Stephanie stared at her very first love, her hero, the man who had broken her heart, the man who had caused so much pain, the man who had risked everything to save her. Kyle smiled at her and looked deeply into her blue eyes, as though nothing had changed between them. “You’re even more beautiful than I remember. I’ve missed you, Stephanie. Admit it. You still love me. I can see it in your eyes.”
“I’m just surprised. How did you get past the security gate?”
“Really, Stephanie?” he questioned as though he had been insulted. “I can’t believe you need to ask.”
Suddenly she felt incredibly stupid for asking. He was Kyle Robertson, after all, and nothing seemed to be impossible for him. “You made it to the White House, Kyle. I always knew you would be the President one day.”
“You always did believe in me.” His warm smile suddenly faded and his face filled with sentimental regret. “But you were supposed to be there with me. I still want you, Stephanie.”
Stephanie curled her lip with disgust. “Forget it, Kyle. I hardly want to be forced to start a regimen of antibiotics. And when Brian finds out you let yourself in, he’s going to be furious with you.”
“What’s he going to do…give me an embolism?”
Stephanie wondered why he would accuse Brian of such a thing. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I thought you knew. Forget I said anything.”
“I know this isn’t a social call. Brian and I saw the news yesterday…along with the rest of the world. And what about me? I’m scared, Kyle.”
“You should know by now that I won’t let anything happen to you. I already have your home under surveillance, and no matter where you go, someone will be watching you. I promise we will find them before they find you.”
“Oh, please…you can’t even find the terrorists who bombed Midlands Hospital.”
“Come on, Stephanie. We knew who bombed Midlands Hospital within an hour after it happened.”
“Then why haven’t any arrests been made?”
“It’s complicated. Do you remember Abdullah’s son, Barraq…the one he took to George Town? You told us he was five years old at the time, and that he wanted to touch your blonde hair. Meet America’s newest terrorist. And he’s working with Tareef’s son, Tamir. Both Barraq and Tamir are Saudi princes. Our hands are tied.”
“What about Tareef? He’ll never rest until I’m dead.”
“I’m working on a long term solution.”
“And in the meantime?” she asked, her eyes wide with fear.
“In the meantime, you’re safe. I know you won’t admit it, but deep down in your heart you know you trust me, and I know you love me, too. Dig deep, Stephanie. It’s all there. Just once, I want to hear you say it…say you still love me.”
Stephanie shook her head. “Why don’t you leave the same way you came in and slither on out of here?”

The trip had been a long one and Kessa wanted more than anything to sleep, but there was no time. After her weekend with Master, he had given her just enough time to unpack the few things she was going to keep in her tiny apartment. She packed up the remainder of her things and stuffed her car for the drive to her new home. The apartment in the city would one day be sold. Kessa’s life was elsewhere now.
She left the city in darkness, driving for three hours to the forested hills upstate. As she approached the secluded facility that was now her home, she pressed the garage door opener and it appeared that a section of the hill opened. She drove inside and the door closed behind her. Hidden by the blackness of the hills, Kessa locked her car and opened the door to her secretive abode. She flipped the switch and the lights came on one by one. She cleared the desk in Master’s office and tried to make everything look perfect, breathing a sigh of relief when the side door opened.
“You are on time tonight.”
“Yes,” Master replied.
Kessa stood, as was expected, and welcomed the man she knew only as Master.
“Hurry, Kessa, I cannot wait any longer.”
Kessa had made a promise her first night never to deny this man. Master had taken her in every way imaginable that first weekend, and she had never been happier. Kessa’s job claimed much of her time, and when she was away, she never lacked the attention of gorgeous men who wanted to take her home for the night, but she was never tempted. Master made certain that she was sexually satiated before she left on a business trip as well as upon her return home.
In her dreams that night, Kessa began thrashing about in the bed and then she felt the warm body wrap around her. The warmth of Master’s naked form was comforting, as it had always been.
“Wake up, Kessa,” the deep voice commanded.
Kessa wrestled with her dreams and finally shook them from her mind. “Master?”
The big man pulled her onto his naked form, wrapped his arms around her, and said, “Sleep, my love.”
Kessa smoothed her hands along Master’s arms. It was the first time he had mentioned the word love.

Unable to resist a mystery, Jerry uncovers an on-line gaming site referring to a ‘secret place’ for young people who feel they don’t fit in and a game master who promises them a world where they will belong. When the daily news headline reads, “Pritchett, James (31), Murderer, Escapes from Prison,” Jerry’s mind begins to race, and after a bit of research, he finds more about the elusive Mr. Pritchett. Guilty of murdering the Watts family, he escaped prison and was last seen not far from the city of Somerville. But is the escaped prisoner the game master?
“What’s this game?” I pointed at the name, “The Clash of Magic and Swords?”
“Beats me,” said Justin. Nick shook his head as well.
“It’s an on-line multi-player strategy game,” said Kate. “It has a lot of fantasy elements in it.”
“People play on-line games,” said Justin. “There’s nothing weird about it.”
He was right. “Look for something else,” I said. I wanted to find something important on Will’s laptop, something that would give us a hint about who had taken him or if he was in contact with someone.
There were pages where Will talked about going out on his own and finding a ‘secret place’ to share with his friends, especially Stephen. I read one of the entries to myself. It was written about six months ago. “I wish I could find a place, a place I could call my own. I would be surrounded by my friends and we would play as long as we wanted. Maybe someday I’ll find it and then I’ll go there.” I read the rest of the pages. William sounded obsessed with finding his own ‘secret place.’ I read an entry that was made a month ago. “I think I’ve found it. Stephen and I came to know about it around the same time. I can’t wait to go there. He said he’ll take both of us. I’m so excited. We are Orphans of the World!”
“Who’s he?” I asked myself. At first I thought it was Stephen, but re-reading the last line again told me there was a third person involved.
“A Clash of Magic and Swords,” she answered enthusiastically. “I made a lot of friends through this. Have you heard of it?” she asked.
“No…I…” and then I remembered. I had seen the game in both Stephen’s and Will’s history when I was in their rooms. Stephen played the game on his laptop while Will played it on his desktop computer. My mind felt as if it was trying to tell me something but I couldn’t make out what.
“Can you find out how many people in Somerville play this game?” I asked.
Ana nodded at me. “The game has all kinds of stats in it,” she said. “You can know more about the game from here,” she answered, opening a menu for me.
“Thanks,” I said. I looked at the menu in front of me. It had all sorts of information. The final version of the game was made available to the public six months ago. According to the statistics, Ana’s profile showed more than a hundred players from Somerville. There was also a list of different teams or guilds players could join.
My eyes noticed the guild named “Orphans Of The World.”
“That’s a very powerful guild,” said Ana. “It’s very exclusive.”
“Can you show it to me?” I asked.
“We do not belong here. Our place is below the sun and moon. Those of you who wish to join, come open the circle to our world.”

When Olivia returns to Horseshoe Hills to sell her childhood home, she discovers someone or something living in her house. Family photographs are gone and in their stead are photos of a man dressed in black trousers and a laced up white shirt. He appears young, with a pompous smile on his face. Olivia is unaware that she is being watched, and in the eyes of the watcher she is the epitome of the evils of secular society, wearing too much makeup and clothes so form fitting they leave little to the imagination.
“Hello,” she called many times as she went from room to room. It was too quiet, so she ran up the stairs to her old bedroom. The door was shut and she heard muffled voices coming from inside the room. She listened with her ear to the door to the unmistakable sounds of sex. She stood with her arms crossed, fuming as each minute passed. When the door opened, she grabbed the man by the arm. “Hey loverboy, that’s disgusting. Who are you anyway?”
The man was unaccustomed to women questioning him. He gave the orders in his world. He placed his hands firmly on Olivia’s arms. “I am Adal.”
“Get out of my house, Adal!”
Adal raised his hand as if to slap her across the face, but she stopped him in mid swing. “I would think twice about that if I were you.”
“Woman, let go of me!” Adal forced Olivia’s hand from his arm and walked off, but Olivia was right behind him.
“You’re not fooling anyone. I know your kind. I grew up here, and every cult leader in the country tried to put down roots in this part of the country. I suppose you think that since no one was living here, the house belongs to you. Well, it doesn’t.”
Adal spun around. “This is not a cult.” He walked away and looked out into the back yard. A smile formed on his lips as he watched the women toil in the dirt. One by one they would be chosen to share his bed. They knew what was expected of them. His fleshly desires were theirs to satisfy and for this honor they would be rewarded in the hereafter. He glanced back at Olivia. She was the epitome of the evils of secular society. She wore too much makeup and with the clothes she wore, anyone could easily visualize her naked form. Adal realized he was staring and quickly averted his gaze to the floor.
Adal stood in the doorway of Olivia’s bedroom and listened to the sound of her tears. Curled into a fetal position, she looked younger than her years, and he felt sorry for her. He stepped inside the room and sat down on the bed. He wiped the tears that streamed down her face and waited for her to open her eyes. “I am so very sorry for the loss of your parents. Perhaps keeping the house would help fill the void in your young life. We can be your family, Olivia, if you will allow us. I will bring you some tea.”
“Okay,” Olivia mumbled.
Clara was folding laundry when Adal asked her for some hot tea. “Shall I add the special herbs?”
“Yes,” he said.
“Drink this, Olivia. You will feel better soon.” Olivia drank about half and then handed the cup to Adal, but he insisted that she drink it all. Then he watched as she slowly drifted off to sleep. When her eyelids began to flutter, he knew that the visions were coming to her. She began to thrash about and Adal lay down beside her and held her, whispering, “We are here for you, Olivia. The dreams will subside if you succumb to their will.”

When Vicki notices a small tear in the wallpaper of her old house, she discovers a hole in the actual wall. Tearing down the thin plaster, she finds a room of thick cement. Searching the internet for information about the houses in her neighborhood, she learns that years ago the area had been part of the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves. With a plausible explanation for the room that seems awkward in its placement, she runs her hands along the cold cement and the faded scribbled names. One appears to be Wilson but the last name is unclear. A voice from behind her booms, “Wilson Jones.” A stunned Vicki turns to see a tall, dark man with full lips and bulging muscles.
“How did you get in?”
“Front door was open. You know, you really should be more careful. You never know when someone like me might take advantage of someone like you.”
Vicki took a step back. “What do you mean…someone like you?”
Wilson motioned toward the empty room. “A runaway slave.”
“You’re not a runaway slave. That was years ago.”
“Ah, yes, well, perhaps I should have said, “The great-grandson of a runaway slave.”
“Do you live around here?” Vicki whispered.
“Next door, in the abandoned house.”
“You mean you don’t own it?”
“You obviously didn’t do your homework when shopping for houses. Didn’t you wonder why the price of this monstrosity was so low?”
“Well, sure, but I just thought it was a good deal.”
“Oh, it is…it is a very good deal. The neighborhood is full of squatters such as myself.”
Vicki felt uneasy with this man in her house and she wanted to ask him to leave, but she also wanted to know why he had come to her house at such an odd time of the night. “Why did you come into my house?”
“Curiosity, I suppose. I watched you move in and I know you live here alone.” His eyes seemed to become darker as he flashed his white teeth in a wide smile.
“What do you want from me?”
“Ah, the pretty white princess is just like all of the rest, is she?”
Vicki was lifted easily into Wilson’s arms and he laid the petite woman down upon his bed. She felt safe and protected with this man whose skin was as dark as night. Vicki’s slender arms around him made Wilson feel like a man again, a feeling he thought he had been robbed of forever.
As they lay together, Vicki thought that Wilson was the perfect man. It was not until the light shone through the window the following morning that she realized what she had done. She had slept in the arms of a black man. That was taboo in her world, something so forbidden that women who were seen with men such as Wilson were often shunned in public places. Vicki smiled sweetly and told him that she needed to go home.
“See you around, Vicki.” Wilson turned on the shower and closed the bathroom door. With the water streaming down his face, he could almost ignore the tears that were mixed with it.

An epic novel of wealth and fame, politics and adulterous romances, murder and intrigue, along with family secrets that each generation swears to take to the grave.
An idealist, Jack Gilbert travels to California where life’s events make him a witness to and participant in the intrigues and brutality of war. Involved in espionage, he becomes an adulterer, a secret he vows to take to his grave. Following the war, his life of love, politics, and growing wealth compromises his idealism, and as each new generation of Gilberts emerges, there is little realization that the family’s wealth has come at great expense to others. But greed, like a moving train, is hard to stop.
Joshette unlocks the door and leads Jack inside. She shows him the files where the documents are kept and Jack quickly begins taking pictures. In a few minutes he is ready to leave, but Joshette hears noise outside of the office. “It’s the janitor. He will open the door, turn the light on, and begin to clean.”
She begins to undress and tells Jack to quickly remove his pants and jacket. She sits on the desk and parts her legs. In the ambient light, Jack sees a smile on Joshette’s face as she says, “Do you need some help, or can you perform under these conditions?”
Jack silently and quickly complies, as the door to the office slowly opens. When the janitor sees them, he immediately exits and closes the door.
Joshette asks, “Are you going to finish?”
Jack lowers her onto the desk and the passion is immediate. He puts his arm under her head and pulls her gently closer to him.
Afterward, they go to the Colonial Hotel for dinner and drinks, but are relatively silent. Jack breaks the silence, “What happened goes far beyond our duties…”
Joshette interrupts, “You don’t need to make an excuse for my behavior. We did what we had to do to get out of a situation. Afterward, I wanted sex.”
“These are strange times in North Africa.” He kisses her gently on the lips and walks to his car. Struggling with his adulterous conduct, he attempts to justify what is happening on the war.
Jack’s son David is born in 1950, on the day the Korean War begins, the first military action of the cold war, and as the war drags on, Jack becomes wealthier and wealthier. When it ends, some five million soldiers and civilians are dead, and Jack feels a degree of responsibility for the deaths. It is, after all, some of his businesses that manufacture weapons for war.
Years later, Jack’s son David departs for the second military action of the cold war – Viet Nam.
The bush is thick, and David and the others slow down for fear of being ambushed. David’s buddy Freddy continues on and is quickly lost from view. After a few minutes David moves ahead alone to search for him. He moves silently, and sees movement in the bushes. He sees Freddy on his knees over a dead Viet Cong. He appears to be cutting his head off. David looks around, sees no one, then speaks just loud enough for Freddy to hear. Freddy stops what he is doing and motions for David to come over. Looking at the dead Viet Cong with half of his head cut off, David says, “What in the hell are you doing?”
Freddy has a surprised look on his face as he replies, “I’m killing the enemy and making an example of him to any other Viet Cong who comes into this village. When I remove his head, I’m going to put it on a pole as an example of what will happen to the next Viet Cong.”
David is stupefied at Freddy’s words. “What you are doing is a death sentence for the people of this village. When Charley sees that head on a pole he will think the villagers did it, and they will kill everyone in the village to set an example to everyone who opposes them.”
Freddy doesn’t respond.
David wonders if Freddy is a psychopathic killer or if he really believes the only solution to winning is to kill every one of the enemy. “You are always the first to go after Charley, but they never seem to survive once you get to them.”
Freddy smiles back. “Why would you want to capture scum like that? I don’t take prisoners, unless I’m told to.”
“But you seem to enjoy killing them.”
“I do enjoy killing them, and I hope this war never ends.”
Several days after they return from leave in Saigon, they are on a patrol and as usual, Freddy is in the front of the shooting. He is unseen, and right behind him is David. David sees the Viet Cong firing at Freddy and Freddy firing back. Freddy is shot and bleeding out from a wound that severed the main artery in his leg. David takes a towel and puts it over Freddy’s leg to apply pressure, but he is hesitant about applying enough pressure to stop the flow of blood. This is his chance to prevent Freddy from committing another atrocity.
Freddy can feel that no pressure is being applied. He looks up at David, smiles and says, “Welcome to the club.”

Kessa had never known a man like Master. He took her breath away with his mysterious sexiness and spontaneity. The night they met, Kessa had been invited to the house of the Ritual by a lone hitchhiker she dared to pick up on a gloomy rainy night. Master had watched from a dark corner as man after man begged to touch Kessa, tried to kiss her, and attempted to charm his way into her life. The young woman could not resist the reclusive charmer and she left with him that night, though she knew nothing about him or the dark life he led.
Kessa’s car came to a stop in front of the house and Ace wasted no time hurrying to the door. They slopped through the rain and the slippery mud and Kessa followed Ace inside. He took her jacket and disappeared into a small room. As Kessa waited, she looked around and realized that the inside of the house was no better than the outside. The walls were bare, with torn wallpaper hanging loose, and the furniture was worn and filthy.
When Ace came out of the room, he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and Kessa thought he was absolutely gorgeous. The man’s hair was black, his eyes a deep blue, and he was very well proportioned, at least what could be seen of him. Still, there was an air of mystery that surrounded him. He did not smile, and when he spoke to Kessa, he ordered her.
“Come with me, Kessa,” he said, not bothering to wait for a response.
Kessa followed Ace through the dark damp house, the floor creaking as they walked. She swore the creaking sounded like an eerie message, but she couldn’t make out what it was trying to say. They turned and walked down a long hallway, with Ace glancing over his shoulder from time to time to make certain that Kessa was following him. At the end of the hallway Ace opened an old rotted door and led Kessa down a long staircase to what appeared to be a darkened room. In the corner of the room was one lone naked red light bulb. It was somewhat blinding in the darkness and Kessa blinked her eyes several times as they adjusted to the light. In the shadows she could see the naked outlines of men and women, and in the darkness of the room the men and women became real and passed by her one at a time. Some of the men reached out and tried to touch her, but Ace would not allow it. He whispered seductively to her, “You are very beautiful, Kessa. Everyone wants you.”
Kessa slept alone in Master’s bed. It was a fitful sleep, filled with strange dreams. She dreamed of when she had first met Master and she remembered the men who had come to her for nothing more than a chance to touch her.
